BOTOX® Injections

Although BOTOX® injections are well-known treatments for diminishing signs of facial wrinkles and fine lines, they also offer a number of innovative and therapeutic uses in dentistry. Dr. Jarrod Cornehl utilizes BOTOX® injections to address oral health conditions such as TMJ disorder and bruxism, as well as cosmetic dentistry issues like gummy smiles. Plus, Dr. Cornehl has been extensively trained in performing these treatments for aesthetic facial rejuvenation—these applications can be popular options for our dental patients who would like to enhance other facial areas affected by signs of age, stress, and fatigue.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic?

BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for the cosmetic reduction of forehead lines and has successfully been used to treat a surprising range of additional conditions, such as gummy smiles, TMJ disorder, and many others.

BOTOX® Cosmetic is a purified version of Botulinum Toxin Type A. It has been proven to reduce the effects of facial aging, such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and other complexion issues. When injected into the skin, BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles.

BOTOX® injections work by relaxing the contractions of the muscles that cause many common types of facial wrinkles; however, BOTOX® Cosmetic does not treat the type of wrinkle formed by loss of volume beneath the skin. Those wrinkles are often better treated with dermal fillers.

For over a decade, I’ve experienced painfully tight facial muscles due to bruxism – teeth grinding and clenching. I use a mouth guard at night to protect my teeth, but have not had much relief from the constant discomfort. It feels like I have huge muscle knots in my face and even contributes to headaches and dizziness.
I found out that Dr Cornehl offers therapeutic Botox injections and made an appointment. He explained the treatment and answered my questions. After the injections, I felt immediate relief and continued to feel better over the next few days. The effect will last 4-6 months. My facial tissue is much softer and my jaw isn’t clicking as often.
I had a recheck appointment today and I had a few small areas where the facial muscles were still feeling tight. Dr Cornehl treated me with trigger point therapy. I felt great after my appointment! I think that I will have an easier time sleeping without the constant pain, and I’ll feel better at work during the day.

BOTOX® Cosmetic for Facial Rejuvenation

With BOTOX® injections, you can enjoy a refreshed, rejuvenated facial appearance. Combined with a cosmetic dental treatment like teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, these injections can be an ideal way to feel great about yourself any time you enter a room, whether it’s at work, the gym, out with friends at a restaurant, a quiet evening at home, or anywhere you go.

Dr. Cornehl offers BOTOX® injections to soften and reduce wrinkles on various areas of the face. BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat common concerns such as:

BOTOX® Cosmetic has also been utilized to effectively address other types of aesthetic concerns; however, these applications are considered “off-label.” Some of these additional uses for BOTOX® Cosmetic include:

The results of BOTOX® Cosmetic typically last 3-4 months. Once the results begin to fade, injections can be administered to maintain the anti-aging effect.

What Is Treatment with BOTOX® Injections Like?

The actual BOTOX® treatment process is often very quick—as little as 10 to 15 minutes for many patients, depending on the extent of treatment required to achieve individual goals. Based on the customized treatment plan, Dr. Cornehl will use a fine needle to precisely inject the BOTOX® Cosmetic solution into the areas targeted for rejuvenation. To reduce residual bruising after the procedure, Dr. Cornehl can use a device called AccuVein® (described below) prior to injection, which allows him to visualize underlying veins and diminish the potential for excessive bruising following treatment.

Once the BOTOX® Cosmetic procedure is complete, most patients do not need a period of downtime and can resume their regular daily activities immediately.

AccuVein® to Reduce Bruising

AccuVein® is a revolutionary device that reduces the risk of bruising from BOTOX® injections and JUVÉDERM® treatments. When this device is combined with Dr. Cornehl’s experience and training placing injectables, bruising is greatly minimized.

AccuVein® provides a roadmap showing Dr. Cornehl the complete vasculature beneath your skin. In other words, by shining the infrared light on the treatment area, Dr. Cornehl can see all the veins beneath. This allows him to place the BOTOX® Cosmetic or filler injections in the most ideal location. In combination with rounded microcannulas, AccuVein® makes it possible to place injections in the tissue without bumping into the veins, which is how it minimizes bruising.

This vein illumination is painless and noninvasive. Dr. Cornehl holds the small device in his hand. A square of red light will be displayed on your skin, and there’s no pain or any sensation caused by the device at all. It’s as though a flashlight is shone on your skin.

The benefits of including AccuVein® in your injectable treatment include:

The infrared light is actually absorbed by the hemoglobin in your blood. That is what illuminates the veins and makes them stand out beneath the light of the laser.

You may be wondering if a dentist is the best choice for BOTOX® Cosmetic and filler injections. You may have noticed many types of medical and cosmetic professionals offer these services. How Does BOTOX® Work for Other Concerns?

BOTOX® is an FDA-approved protein complex that temporarily blocks the nerve impulses responsible for muscle contraction. When BOTOX® is injected into the muscles in and around your mouth, it can correct a number of oral health problems, such as TMJ disorder and bruxism. The injections only take a few minutes and results can last for several months at a time.

In the sections below you can learn more about how BOTOX® injections can often be useful in the treatment of a number of common conditions. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to contact our office.

BOTOX® Injections for TMJ Disorder

Millions of people suffer from chronic headaches and recurring neck and facial pain. In some cases, these issues are the result of temporomandibular joint disorder, commonly referred to as TMD or TMJ.

Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints are used frequently throughout the day when you speak, chew, swallow, and yawn. When your jaw joints, teeth, and face muscles are not in harmonious balance, you can develop painful complications, such as:

While still a relatively new TMJ treatment option, BOTOX® has been found to effectively address a number of medical issues caused by muscle overexertion. Various conditions, such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating, and uncontrollable blinking have been successfully treated with BOTOX®, making it a viable solution for TMD as well.

Many TMJ symptoms are caused by the overstimulation of the masseter muscle – the muscle primarily used when you speak and eat. During your BOTOX® treatment, Dr. Cornehl will strategically administer a series of injections directly into your masseter muscle, relaxing the muscle and relieving tension in the jaw.

The benefits of using BOTOX® to treat TMJ include:

Repeat sessions are necessary in order to achieve the best results from your BOTOX® treatment. Many patients feel significant relief from their TMJ disorder after only a couple of sessions.

BOTOX® Injections for Bruxism

Bruxism is a medical term that describes the act of teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Chronic teeth grinding can cause aching jaws, severe headaches, ear pain, and can also lead to the wearing down and breaking of your teeth. Teeth grinding can also misalign the temporomandibular joint and lead to TMD. Most cases of bruxism occur during slumber, but the condition can also occur involuntarily during waking hours. It is often linked with contributing factors such as stress or anxiety.

Common bruxism treatments range from sleeping with an uncomfortable mouth guard to exercise regimens meant to relax certain muscles. With BOTOX® treatment, Dr. Cornehl can quickly relax the facial muscles responsible for teeth clenching and grinding and relieve symptoms such as:

Results typically last for four to six months.

BOTOX® Injections for Gummy Smiles and Hypermobile Lips

Dr. Cornehl is devoted to improving the health and appearance of your entire smile, not just your teeth. If your gums are too large or uneven, your teeth may likewise look stubby or uneven. This condition is commonly referred to as a gummy smile.

The problem isn’t just with your gums. Gummy smiles occur when your gums, teeth, and upper jaw are not in the right proportion. Gummy smiles can happen because of:

Gummy smiles are often related to specific facial muscles that contract more intensely than they should. This occurs in cases of hypermobile lips. BOTOX® injections relax these muscles so that they no longer tighten as much.

During treatment, small units of BOTOX® are injected into the targeted muscles. You can return to your daily routine immediately after treatment and, after a week or two, you should begin to notice that your upper lip no longer rises above the gum line. With BOTOX® injections, the affected muscles can return to a normal range of use, creating a more attractive smile.

The results of BOTOX® injections are not permanent and require maintenance injections every 8-12 weeks.

BOTOX® Injections for Asymmetric Smiles

Symmetry is part of a perfect smile. Until recently, surgery was one of the only options available to fix lopsided or asymmetrical smiles. Now, in some cases, Dr. Cornehl can correct crooked smiles that are caused by asymmetric muscle tone with BOTOX® injections. This treatment can relax your lip muscles and give you a smile that is more proportionate.

Are There Side Effects to BOTOX® Injections?

The most common side effects from BOTOX® injections are redness, bruising, and swelling in the treatment sites. These effects are typically very mild and should dissipate quickly. In fact, they can often be well-covered with makeup until they fade. BOTOX® injections do not usually require a recovery period following treatment, and most patients are able to resume work and other daily routines immediately. Dr. Cornehl will explain the potential risks and side effects of this treatment beforehand so you will know what to expect before the procedure is performed.

How Much Do BOTOX® Injections Cost?

The cost of BOTOX® injections at our practice is $15 per unit. BOTOX® injections are priced according to how much of the solution, which is composed of “units,” is being utilized to provide the desired results. It is important to note that, since these treatments are customized for each individual’s specific needs and goals, the total price of the procedure varies significantly among patients. An in-person evaluation will be necessary before it is possible to provide a cost estimate that is specific to your treatment plan. The precise cost will depend upon the number of units needed to treat your area(s) of concern, which will be based on your aesthetic goals, the quality of the tissues in the areas being addressed, and the strength and size of the muscles in those areas. All of these factors will be examined during the initial consultation.

Once you have been evaluated and your treatment plan is developed, a member of our team can provide you with an overall cost estimate and go over it with you. The DENTAL STUDIO SF accepts a wide variety of convenient payment methods, including financing plans through LendingClub® and ALPHAEON™ Credit. These well-known agencies offer qualified applicants a way to finance their treatment over time. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the best ways to fit this popular procedure into your budget.
