What Is BOTOX®?
BOTOX® Cosmetic was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002 for the cosmetic reduction of forehead lines and has successfully been used to treat a surprising range of other conditions, such as excessive sweating and gummy smiles.
BOTOX® is a purified version of Botulinum Toxin Type A. It has been proven to reduce the effects of facial aging, such as crow’s feet, frown lines and other complexion issues. When injected into the skin, BOTOX® temporarily paralyzes the facial muscles that contribute to wrinkles.
Dr. Cornehl offers BOTOX® injections to soften and reduce wrinkles on various areas of the face:
- Vertical lines between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet
- Horizontal forehead lines
- “Smoker’s lines” or “lipstick lines” around the lips
BOTOX® works by relaxing the contractions of the muscles that cause these types of wrinkles. BOTOX® does not treat the type of wrinkle formed by loss of volume beneath the skin. Those wrinkles are better treated with dermal fillers.
With BOTOX® injections, you can enjoy a refreshed, rejuvenated facial appearance. The results last 3-4 months. At that point, injections can be administered to maintain the anti-aging effect. Combined with a cosmetic dental treatment like teeth whitening or porcelain veneers, these injections can be an ideal way to feel great about yourself any time you enter a room, whether it’s at work, the gym, out with friends at a restaurant, a quiet evening at home or anywhere you go.
How Does BOTOX® Work?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved protein complex that temporarily blocks the nerve impulses responsible for muscle contraction. When BOTOX® is injected into the muscles in and around your mouth, it can correct a number of oral health problems, such as TMJ disorder and bruxism. The injections only take a few minutes and results can last for several months at a time.
For over a decade, I’ve experienced painfully tight facial muscles due to bruxism – teeth grinding and clenching. I use a mouth guard at night to protect my teeth, but have not had much relief from the constant discomfort. It feels like I have huge muscle knots in my face and even contributes to headaches and dizziness.
I found out that Dr Cornehl offers therapeutic Botox injections and made an appointment. He explained the treatment and answered my questions. After the injections, I felt immediate relief and continued to feel better over the next few days. The effect will last 4-6 months. My facial tissue is much softer and my jaw isn’t clicking as often.
I had a recheck appointment today and I had a few small areas where the facial muscles were still feeling tight. Dr Cornehl treated me with trigger point therapy. I felt great after my appointment! I think that I will have an easier time sleeping without the constant pain, and I’ll feel better at work during the day.

You may be wondering if a dentist is the best choice for BOTOX® and filler injections. You may have noticed many types of medical and cosmetic professionals offer these services. Dr. Cornehl and our team urge you to ask any potential injector about their relevant experience, training and credentials. What programs have they completed? How often do they perform these injections at their practice? The person performing the injections should have lengthy experience and training. They should perform the injections routinely, and should have past patient before-and-after images and/or patient testimonials to show you.
Dentists have extensive knowledge of the face and facial structures, specifically the oral-maxillofacial region, which is the area that includes the mouth, jaw and face. Dentists perform treatments and procedures specific to the head, face, mouth and neck every day, which means we have much familiarity with this area of the anatomy, which is the same area in which injectables are administered.
But dental training should be combined with BOTOX® and dermal filler training. Dr. Cornehl is an experienced dentist who has completed the injectable training outlined above. He is personally committed to helping you look and feel great. Call us today to find out if you are a candidate for these services.
AccuVein® Reduces Bruising
AccuVein is a revolutionary device that reduces the risk of bruising from BOTOX® and Juvederm injections. When this device is combined with Dr. Cornehl’s experience and training placing injectables, bruising is greatly minimized.
AccuVein provides a roadmap showing Dr. Cornehl the complete vasculature beneath your skin. In other words, by shining the infrared light on the treatment area, Dr. Cornehl can see all the veins beneath. This allows him to place the BOTOX® or filler injections in the most ideal location. In combination with rounded microcannulas, AccuVein makes it possible to place injections in the tissue without bumping into the veins, which is how it minimizes bruising.
This vein illumination is painless and noninvasive. Dr. Cornehl holds the small device in his hand. A square of red light will be displayed on your skin, and there’s no pain or any sensation caused by the device at all. It’s as though a flashlight is shone on your skin.
The benefits of including AccuVein in your injectable treatment include:
- Avoid getting a bruise
- Fast recovery
- Better patient satisfaction
The infrared light is actually absorbed by the hemoglobin in your blood. That is what illuminates the veins and makes them stand out beneath the light of the laser.
Treating TMJ With BOTOX®
Millions of people suffer from chronic headaches and recurring neck and facial pain. In some cases, these issues are the result of temporomandibular disorder, commonly referred to as TMD or TMJ.
Your temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your lower jawbone to your skull. These joints are used frequently throughout the day when you speak, chew, swallow and yawn. When your jaw joints, teeth and face muscles are not in harmonious balance, you can develop painful complications, such as:
- Facial pain
- Neck and shoulder aches
- Jaw joint popping or clicking
- Ear pain
- Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
While still a relatively new TMJ treatment option, BOTOX® has been found to effectively address a number of medical issues caused by muscle overexertion. Various conditions, such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating and uncontrollable blinking have been successfully treated with BOTOX®, making it a viable solution for TMD as well.
Many TMJ symptoms are caused by the overstimulation of the masseter muscle, the muscle primarily used when you speak and eat. During your BOTOX® treatment, Dr. Cornehl will strategically administer a series of injections directly into your masseter muscle, relaxing the muscle and relieving tension in the jaw.
The benefits of using BOTOX® to treat TMJ include:
- Muscles are alleviated of tension
- Zero downtime after treatment
- Only specific muscles are treated
- Sessions are relatively painless
- Injections are minimally invasive
Repeat sessions are necessary in order to achieve the best results from your BOTOX® treatment. Many patients feel significant relief from their TMJ disorder after only a couple of sessions.
Bruxism Treatment With BOTOX®
Bruxism is a medical term that describes the act of teeth grinding and jaw clenching. Chronic teeth grinding can cause aching jaws, severe headaches, ear pain and can also lead to the wearing down and breaking of your teeth. Most cases of bruxism occur during slumber, but the condition can also occur involuntarily during waking hours. It is often linked with contributing factors such as stress or anxiety.
Common bruxism treatments range from sleeping with an uncomfortable mouth guard to exercise regimes meant to relax certain muscles. With BOTOX® treatment, Dr. Cornehl can quickly relax the facial muscles responsible for teeth clenching and grinding and relieve symptoms, such as:
- Jaw pain or tightness
- Fatigue in the jaw or other parts of your face
- Wear or damage to your teeth
- Chronic headaches
Teeth grinding can also misalign the temporomandibular joint and lead to TMD. Results typically last for four to six months.
BOTOX® For Gummy Smiles And Hypermobile Lips
Dr. Cornehl is devoted to improving the health and appearance of your entire smile, not just your teeth. If your gums are too large or uneven, your teeth may likewise look stubby or uneven. This condition is commonly referred to as a gummy smile.
The problem isn’t just with your gums. Gummy smiles occur when your gums, teeth and upper jaw are not in the right proportion. Gummy smiles can happen because of:
- A hypermobile lip (lips pull back too far when you smile)
- The thickness and length of the upper lip
- How the upper jaw and teeth are placed in relation to the skull
- The amount of gums that has taken over your teeth
- The overall size and shape of your teeth
Gummy smiles are often related to specific facial muscles that contract more intensely than they should. This occurs in cases of hypermobile lips. BOTOX® relaxes these muscles so that they no longer tighten as much.
During treatment, small units of BOTOX® are injected into the targeted muscles. You can return to your daily routine immediately after treatment, and after a week or two, you should begin to notice that your upper lip no longer rises above the gum line. With BOTOX®, the affected muscles return to a normal range of use, creating a more attractive smile.
BOTOX® results are not permanent and require maintenance injections every 8-12 weeks.
BOTOX® For Treating Asymmetric Smiles
Symmetry is part of a perfect smile. Until recently, surgery was one of the only options available to fix lopsided or asymmetrical smiles. Now, in some cases, Dr. Cornehl can correct crooked smiles that are caused by asymmetric muscle tone with BOTOX®. This treatment can relax your lip muscles and give you a smile that is more proportionate.
Dermal Fillers – Juvederm And Voluma
While BOTOX® is designed to prevent facial muscles from contracting, dermal fillers are used to add volume to areas of the mouth that have deteriorated due to age or other factors. Dermal fillers consist of an injectable gel that contains hyaluronic acid, a substance that occurs naturally in the body.
Dermal fillers such as Juvederm, Voluma and other Allergen products can address a variety of problems that affect the appearance of your smile, such as thin, flat lips and sunken cheeks. Treatment with Juvederm and Voluma offer a number of benefits, including:
- Immediate, natural looking results
- No downtime following treatment
- Minimally invasive procedure
- Virtually pain-free
- Utilizes natural substances found in the body
Although results vary from patient to patient, the effects of your dermal filler treatment can last for several months. Dr. Cornehl will discuss your options, candidacy and realistic expectations during your consultation.
Fillers can also be used with PRF injections. Platelet-rich fibrin is an injection of your own blood cells, rich with growth factors and other skin-volumizing and smoothing components. PRF injections can also be used alone.
Juvederm For Asymmetric Lips
Thin, flat and asymmetrical lips can deter from the appearance of your smile and undermine much of other dental work you may have had done to enhance your smile’s beauty. Juvederm is an ideal lip enhancement option because its smooth texture allows for subtle increases in volume while maintaining the natural appearance you desire. When deciding how much lip filler to use and where to place the injections, Dr. Cornehl will evaluate three key aspects of your lip appearance:
- Definition of the border
All of these can be affected to a greater or lesser degree by lip augmentation, and it’s important to consider all three factors in order to achieve the best results. Dr. Cornehl will make sure that your lips don’t just become fuller, but that they maintain a natural, proportionate shape that doesn’t look artificial.
Treating Dark Triangles Between Teeth With Juvederm
The term “black triangles” refers to the dark gaps that can sometimes appear on the sides of teeth following implant therapy, periodontal treatment and restoration with crowns or bridges. It occurs when the gum tissue below the teeth is not preserved.
Black triangles can cause patients to feel self-conscious about the appearance of their smiles, but the condition can also create some functional problems like the accumulation of food debris and saliva spraying through the gaps when speaking.
Juvederm can add volume to gum tissue, eliminating gaps and creating proper gum contours. Results can last for up to eight months, after which maintenance injections will be needed.
